Known for its quality of life, Minneapolis-St. Paul may be the ideal area for seniors looking for assisted living facilities. You'll find a diversity of neighborhoods, good metro transportation and lots of green space. And you'll find some of the best health care in the country.
If you're not familiar with Minneapolis-St. Paul, you may be in for a little sticker shock. The cost of living is 14% above the national average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Taxes are among some of the highest in the country at 10.3% for state and local taxes alone. Retirees pensions, including federal pensions, are taxable by Minnesota regardless of where your pension was earned. There is no inheritance tax and a limited estate tax related to federal estate tax collection.
Assisted living facilities in the metro area vary in price according to type of unit (1 or 2 bedroom, studio, etc.) and services (meals, transportation, housekeeping, et al). For example, a basic one bedroom with no amenities may run $600 a month while a 2 bedroom with all the amenities will charge up to $4,000 a month. Most facilities require a security deposit from $300 up to $1,500. The average cost for a one-bedroom assisted living facility is $3,540. For a private room in a nursing home: $239 a day.
