Oklahoma City Memory Care (Alzheimer's & Dementia)

The capital city is a tree with Old West roots and growing modern branches where dozens of assisted living options can found. Metro Oklahoma City - population 1.1 million - sits at the confluence of three major highways, just north of Norman and the University of Oklahoma. Around the city are suburbs with even more options for senior living.

If you're going to live in the city proper, consider the historic neighborhoods of Crown Heights, Heritage Hills, Edgemere Park, and Paseo, which the American Planning Association named "10 Great Neighborhoods for 2010". Around the city, look at the area around Lake Hefner; further north is the suburb city of Edmond; west is the town of Woodlawn Park and just south of that is the fast growing suburb of Mustang.

Getting around won't be hard. The metro bus system covers 465 miles, connecting residents to not only inner-city neighborhoods, but also cities like Edmond and Norman. Trolleys downtown connect residents to shopping and attractions around the city.

In the city, you'll find plenty of diversions such as the Bricktown Canal and Entertainment Districts home of Harkins Theater and dozens of stores and restaurants. Here, water taxis will take you on a 1-mile long canal that runs through the district. Due east of downtown is the Adventure District with the 45th Infantry Division Museum, the Oklahoma City Zoological Park, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, and the Science Museum Oklahoma.

Check out the city's two senior centers, the Will Rogers Citizens Center and the Woodson Park Senior Activity Center. Here you'll find card games, dance, exercise classes, yoga, history discussions, field trips, and many other senior activities.

No matter where you chose assisted living in Oklahoma City, your retirement dollars will certainly stretch. Forbes magazine recently named it their "#1 Most Affordable City", with a cost of living 11% below the national average. The median home price is $125,000, with an average property tax of $1,533. The area's total tax burden, according to the Tax Foundation, is 8.7%, putting it among the lowest in the country. And if you're driving, the average auto insurance premium is $1,793.
