Salem OR Independent Living

Oregon’s capital sits along the Willamette River in the valley of the same name. It’s many cultural attractions and outdoor activities make it an ideal spot for retirees. And Salem assisted living facilities (AFL) are affordable.

Popular Salem attractions include the Bush House Museum, a Victorian home built in 1878 by banker Asahel Bush II. The home sits in 90-acre Bush’s Pasture Park which contains trails, tennis courts, a rose garden and Willamette University’s stadium. Another must-see is the Queen Anne Victorian, built on 4.5 acres and featuring historic gardens.

For performing arts, check out the Elsinore Theater, a restored 1926 vaudeville theater, hosts over 140 events a year. Other venues include the Reed Opera House and Grand Theater.

Check out Salem’s Center 50+ serving the city’s older population. More than 600 senior residents use the center daily making it a great place to socialize. Some of the many activities include billiards, bingo, dances, book club, and exercise programs.

Salem hosts a number of events every year such as the World Beat Festival which features crafts, music, dance, food; the Rose Festival; the Salem Art Fair and Festival; the Bite of Salem held in Riverfront Park with local restaurants providing samples; and the Oregon State Fair held at the Oregon State Fairgrounds.

Salem’s overall cost of living is 4% higher than the U.S. average. According to a Genworth Financial survey, a one-bedroom in a Salem assisted living facility averages $3,294 a month. A private room in a nursing home averages $240 a day, while a semi-private averages $226 a day. The daily services of a home health aide average $50,336 a year based on a 44-hour workweek.
