San Antonio Nursing Homes

It's not surprising you're looking at San Antonio for assisted living facilities. It is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. And the Southwest city is regularly voted "Best Place to Retire" by magazines such as Money and U.S. News and World Report. There are many excellent hospitals within this city of 1.3 million; the cost of living is low; and there are a number of things to do for the active senior.

With well over 100 assisted living facilities, the metropolitan area has plenty of options for its segment of seniors, which represents 20% of the population. For those seniors who want a small town feel while still being close to San Antonio, consider Boerne, New Braunfels, or Canyon Lake. Summers are hot and humid depending on the winds while winters are mild with little if ever any snow. The average high in July is 94 degrees; the average low in January is 38 degrees. The mostly pleasant year-round weather makes the area prime for outdoor activities. Active seniors will love the 50+ golf course, the 136 miles of bike paths, and the city bike-sharing program. San Antonio's parks and recreation operates four senior exercise centers with an annual fee of just $5.

The city is perhaps best known for the Alamo, one of the most visited tourist attractions in the country. A close second is the historic River Walk along the San Antonio River. This maze of shops, restaurants, and bars is popular among locals and tourists alike. Other attractions and events include: SeaWorld; the 10-day city festival, "Fiesta"; the holiday Fiesta de las Luminarias along the River Walk; the 750-foot tall Tower of the Americas; Shakespeare in the Park; the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center and many more. San Antonio boasts are over 30 hospitals including the well-regarded South Texas Medical Center and Acuity Hospital, a long-term care facility. For retired military, look no further than the areas three main military bases: Fort Sam Houston, Lackland, and Randolph Air Force Bases.
